I work in a department store, and we just got some new merchandise in. One of the new t-shirts has the phrase, "Love is a four letter word"
yes, "love" is a four letter word. Is this supposed to have a deeper meaning, or was the person who wrote that just a moron?

When someone says 'four letter word' they're usually talking about "curse" words. Maybe they're saying love is a curse, because it usually ends badly, and/or they're being pessimistic about it. I'm leaning towards your initial impression that it's just moronic.

Considering that most people know that the term "4 letter word" is refering to negative words I think it was probably meant to mean a four letter word in a negative way. Like saying love is a bad word or a bad thing.

Love is a 4 letter word.....
It means what the wearer wants it to mean.
Don't read too much into what the shirt's logo is supposed to mean. Its just a logo meant to SELL the shirt. Companies use "Catchy" phrases in order to make a profit. Or maybe the person who decided to put that on a shirt was telling people that not only can they spell, they can count too!!

Partly it is a play on words, a sort of joke.
Partly it is supposedely a deep saying, pointing out that "four letter word" is a code for "bad words", but that love is not bad,
and at the same time suggesting that "love" is indeed a "four letter word" in other words that love is bad (as in the song "Love Hurts" - see below).

four letter words are usually the unpleasant; vulgar; rude words your parents never allow you to say. I think you know what I mean. words like sh*t; damn stuff like that. the author of that shirt is trying to say that love is bad.
