Filipinos work abroad simply because of the status quo that has held on for decades.

The rich get richer, the government is pathologically corrupt, and morality has been on a steady decline that has led to a higher crime rate.

All of this makes it difficult for the common man/woman to take care of his/her basic needs. Feed the family. Educate the children. Secure land and build a home.

People work abroad and send dollars home to educate, feed and most of the time buy land and build a home. This would all be hardly possible had they stuck it out in the Philippines.

We don't only go abroad to work as maids and ship mates, but also as nurses, doctors and even scientists.... unfortunately some get tricked into prostitution.... or choose to be one- because of lack of education. Our country is very poor.... before you judge Filipinos, find out more about our history. Our country has suffered and our people have been under the Spaniards ( for a few centuries), ... then we were under Japan...after that under America. We have 1707 islands and over 70 dialects. Each of us speaks at least two .... and yes we are Asians! It just boggles my mind how people can say that we are not... it's either they never had Geography in school or they come from a different planet. When my sister, brother and I followed our Mom to Germany- after 8 years of separation... she finally received a permit to let us come and join her... no kidding... this is not bragging, but I'm telling you this to give you something to think: after only one year of intensive German language lessons... all of us three were best in our class. We were the only Asians in our school. We got a lot of respect ... nobody ever looked down on us. To answer your question...why Filipinos go abroad? To help their families survive, because there are no jobs there. When Marcos was the president, our families went bankrupt... people didn't get paid... my Dad at one point didn't get paid for straight 8 months. My Mom with three kids sometimes couldn't feed us three times a day. She finally took the initiative and went overseas as soon as her youngest was weaned. She found a work as a nurse... in fact she will retire this year! Wouldn't your Mom have done the same?

The Philippines is a poor country. Many filipinos (males) and filipinas (females) are working abroad so they can send money home to their families. Many filipinos man the world's ships (freighters). Many filipinas are working as maids for the world's richer folks.
