Just let him down easy and forget the mates crap. Men don't do that... if there is no chance of a relationship he could care less about going to lunch with you and listening to talk about your love life.

Just confront him, and tell him that he's an awesome guy, but you want to value your relationship with him as a best friendship. That way you're telling him that you like him a lot, but you're not interested in dating him.
