It is typically used to denote either possession by evil or an overtaking of the soul by the holy spirit, both of which are believed to cause the person to began reciting things in various other languages and dialects, particularly those that now considered 'dead languages' like Latin.

It is thought to be the language closely associated with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Not all people are given the gift and it means nothing if there is not one who has the gift of interpretation for the edification of the listener. It is in Acts. Many people who converted to Christianity received the gift of tongues instantly after receiving the Holy Ghost. Today, it has lost much of its significance as some Baptist believers have thought that tongues was a mark of true belief. It is not according to the Bible. It is simply a language that mankind, as yet, is unable to interpret. It is thought to have come from a time when the disciples were able to understand and communicate with peoples of languages they had previously not spoken or understood. For example: Peter did not speak or understand Greek, was even considered somewhat illiterate in Hebrew; but when he went to Ephesus, he both spoke and understood and was able to teach there.

In the context of the Bible, speaking in tongues simply means speaking in languages other than the one you know. In the 2nd chapter of the book of Acts the disciples who were all from Galilee were heard speaking in languages of the surrounding countries. (see the list in Acts 2:9-11). Then there is also the language of angels, Paul mentions this in 1 Corinthians 13.
It happened when they were baptized in the Holy Spirit, and it still does for some people today.

When some are filled with the Holy Spirit, they speak in tongues. New languages from God. Some people pray in tongues. Some can't speak it but can interpret it. Read the book of Paul. Very clear about spiritual gifts

WOW, all the answer are incorrect that you have been given. Speaking in tongues is simply speaking in the Language that you speak. If one speaks a language that you are not able to understand, than they are speaking in there tongue. The scriptures tells us that if someone is preaching and is speaking in tongues there should be someone there to interpret what is being said. Everyone of us that can speak, speaks in tongues. Weather or not one can understand it depends on what language that person is speaking.

Speaking in tongues is when people just suddenly become able to speak some language they had never been able to speak. It is a gift from god.
One example is a little kid in egypt who started speaking german all of a sudden, and no one knows where he learned it. this kid was like four and he had never left egypt in his whole life.
Sometimes people just spew out gibberish and claim to be speaking in tongues, but they are usually just full of it.
Some people think the gift of tongues is the ability to learn languages extremely easily and quickly.
Most people who beleive in speaking in tongues agree that it is usually for given to them for spreading god's word.

supposedly it is a condition that occurs when one is filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit and begins to speak a language not of their natural knowledge. Usually it is BS because it usually never happens in accordance to the scriptures. If it is not scripturally done then it can safely be assumed that somebody got bit when handling that last snake and is starting to hallucinate or they are possessed by demons.

I speak in tongues, I can not understand it, its hard to explain, till it happens to you, then you know its just wonderful.
Its better then talking to a person, I have been healed of Cancer, I have talked in this Heavenly wonderful sounding language, and seen tumors disappear, and blind eyes can see, and ears open, and legs grow, and children come home from the hospital, I,v seen money come in from no where, and I have seen my Down-syndrome sister, who could not talk, now she talks. And I can talk to her, she is wonderful.
Super Natural happens when this tongue comes on you, It means you have received what the Bible calls, POWER FROM ON HIGH, TO DO THE IMPOSABLE.
Understand it, no, believe in it
YES.

Some organizations have their own concept on this.
Based on my study it simply means that= When people gather together and they speak a different language, No one understands one another. When the the holy Spirt comes on you, every one understands you in their respective language!
