the key tumblers have been removed and i can turn the ignition on with a screwdriver, but it won't start. the only way to start it is to jump the contacts on the starter relay under the hood. when i turn the screwdriver i can hear a click. the question is: should i start with a new relay or ignition switch?

If you hear a click, the switch is doing its job. Try replacing the relay.

First replace the ignition switch. No use screwing around with a screwdriver to get the thing started every time you want to drive it. If this works then problem solved. If it doesn't, then test the power going into the starter relay. If it is getting power when the key is turned, replace the relay. If it isn't, then replace the electrical part of the ignition switch.

you should start with a switch and a tumbler they are different...you should have a switch on the colum down by the floor run by a rod that comes off the tumbler the switch might just be out of adjustment...2 small bolts hold it down.... hold the key in the start position and move the switch back and forth untill the starter kicks in,,, if there is no rod that run down to the base of the colum the tumbler and switch are all one piece replace it and you got it made...sorry I dont have the book to let you know which one it is

if you just purchased the truck you may wish to check with the police to see if it was stolen before you start dumping time and money into it. if clean get all three pieces [lock and key tumbler, ign switch and the most likely relay on inner fender] you will be at the ign switch to replace the lock anyway

Get a wiring diagram from a book in the library. They often have various books on various models of autos. Sounds like you need a new ignition switch first and foremost.
