I don't like the medication I'm being given (Risperdal) as it makes me drowsy and I can't concentrate. Any views from doctors would be especially valued.

Risperidol is one of the best and most effective medications to treat anxiety and psychosis. You never mentioned the diagnosis as this is important in determining other medications you can be given, certain diagnosis do not comply with the medications which are perscribed. Also we cannot really give you an acurate awnser as we are not your nurses or physicians.Only they know your medical history and such.
I would suggest you see if your medication dosage can be lowered and maybe you can be given a med that coincides with the Risperidol to help with the feelings of being drowsy and not being able to concentrate. Also hang in there it will get better! Your med could be to strong or else your body is adjusting to it.
Good Luck!

I'm not a doctor, but my understanding is that the answer is usually no. Also, it is my understanding that the more often one goes off medication, the worse the psychosis becomes.

What is wonderful is that you recognize your psychosis. That lends itself to a good prognosis. Being drowsy and not being able to concentrate is better than psychosis so perhaps you like the medication but aren't entirely happy with it. Best to talk with your doctor. Maybe he/she could alter the dosage or give you an additional medication.

Yes, it can. Meds are just for short term!!! Psychotherapy is the only way to get through this. I had been on meds for most of my life. Once I got off and really worked at changing my behaviors and thought process, I have been leading a real life. I was on Risperdal for 3 years and it made me sleep. How can you work on problems if you are sleeping all the time?
I am still seeing a doc for monitoring my physical well being.(Being on meds for a long time does damage your Kidney and Liver functions) I see a therapist often. You have to work hard at changing. Chemical imbalance or not. It is our own actions that determine how we get better, not a pill to help us block things out.
My doc has even told me that 90% of her patients want the medicine, while only 20% actually need it.
I am please to hear that you want to find the right way to take care of yourself and not a "magic pill" believer! Good luck for the road ahead will not be an easy one!!!

First of all, it is very important that you give the medication awhile to settle into your system. Sometimes, after time, the symtoms lessen or disappear all together. But, if you find the symtom is too hard to deal with - there are many other medications that your doctor and prescribe. It may be necessary to go through several before you find the one that works for you. Just remember not to stop taking your meds without first consulting your doctor. Some have very serious side effects if you simply stop taking them without weaning yourself off of it. Secondly, you may find if you stop taking meds all together that you will suffer from worsening symtoms (depending on what your diagnosis is) and even suffer from a psychotic break down. So, what it really boils down to is - Ask your doctor - he will know best what is going on in your situation. Just keep in mind that you have to be active in your treatment - if it is not working - let your doctor know that. Communicate with him. Good luck

If you mean depresssion I believe yes. you can make yourself lucky by exercise, eating, go walking and enjoying with whatever can make you happy. Only look the world without thinking until you can back to a good health balance.I believe it better One relys upon his self confidence than medication .

Psychosis is a general term. Many physical and mental illnesses can involve psychotic symptoms. You have to specify what illness you are referring to.
