In a AC-only SYSTEM, you could have an air handler with a variable speed motor that has a electronic controller in the motor and a printed circuit board in the air handler cabinet.

In a HEAT-PUMP SYSTEM, you could have all of the above plus a defrost control board in the outdoor unit. This board controls the defrosting of the OD coil when it ices up during normal operation.

In addition, there may be other devices in the OD unit such as temperature and pressure switches, diagnostic modules etc.

Normally, there are no electronic components in an air conditioner. They are more of an electro/mechanical device. Not much in there, the compressor, an adjustable thermostat ( may just be push buttons or dials to "set" it ) and a fan motor.
