One of my household employees is a devout Muslim, and I would like to know if it's widely practiced to give a monetary gift (similar to a Christmas bonus in Christian cultures) during Ramadan or on Eid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

speeking as a muslim, feel free to give a gift when ever you want, in islam we are asked by the prophet mohammad to exchange gifts, to strengthen the relations between muslims and non muslims as well, so it's really nice of you to think of that, and i'm sure that your employee will appreciate it.

Yeah it is a kind gesture among muslims to do so during Eid or Syawal which is the celebration month after Ramadhan fasting. Back in Malaysia, married muslim couples give away money to children, teens and young adults (who r not working yet -studying in tertiary level, college etc). It is just a token of friendship and love in such a special month.

i think tht it is really sweet of u to consider giving a bonus or some kind of monetary gift to ur employee. I am sure tht he/she would appreciate tht very much.

Ramadan isn't a holiday but the end of Ramadan (Eid) is. We follow a lunar calendar so its not completely known when Eid will take place, but we have 2-3 day time area to work with.
Give your gift then.

I'd suggest donating to a Muslim charity in their name instead. But if you'd like to give a bonus thats fine too.

Thanks for spreading the love :)

Money is a more appropriate gift during Eid. But if you're looking to give your employee something during Ramadan (if its somone you know well), then I would suggest food, ironically enough. Small things like chocolates, sweets, etc... just as a nice thought.

It is one of the obligation in Islam to give charity. It calls ZAKAT when during Ramadan fasting people give certain amount of money ( 2,5% of our annual income or property on hold ) to poor muslims or muslims who need money.

As well it is high spread that after Ramadan month finishes muslims give gifts and presents for the members of their families. It has nothing to do with money-charity, it is just a celebration of Eid

gifts (usually monetary) are given on eid to children who fasted.

however, ur employee will probably appreciate a gift of money or clothing for eid, especially if she has children.

During Ramadhan you can give Zakat - you could donate money to the mosque, or if you see the less unfortunate on the streets. You could also give poor people food.

On Eid presents are given, usually to children, or between families.

Yes, you can. But being a muslim it is hard for someone to accept that food due to the facts Halal/*****. So it would be better if you don't offer them food as halal foods are bit expensive. Rather you join them during the Eid to celebrate with something desert. I am not suggesting you anything. Just trying to give you some info through the sense.

An Eid bonus may be given. We give our domestic servants new clothes for Eid.
