My cat used to do that everytime it wanted to poop... He was basically trying to dig a hole in which he could do it.. Guess its their instinct to do it- they don't realize that they can't dig there...

I have had cats all through my life and it seems that they all do this in one fashion or another. My mother's cat gets really into it (a male) and slobbers on the blanket... gets a far away look in his eyes; it's adorable and funny. My cat (a female) doesn't really grab stuff with her mouth but she definitely does the needing action with her paws. She purrs A LOT and usually when she really means it (the purring) that's when she gets her paws going. :O) Other times if she finds an exceptionally nice place to lay (a shirt, a spot on the couch, a soft towel) she gets to work on it and then lays down in it. And it almost looks like she is smiling--weird I know. All I can think is that it isn't a bad thing and it isn't necessary to discourage the behavior.

When she does the paw march, she is kneeding the spot. My cat does this all the time. Don't forget that animals can suffer from chemical imbalances as well, so she may not be right in the head. lol But seriously, they are in the habbit of nursing so they will suck on various articles for quite some time.....some never grow out of it. It's like it you breast/bottle feed a baby for longer than the reccomended time, it will be difficult for them to adjust. I would suggest massaging the paws at least once a day for a few minutes. This will give the stimulation they need for the paws. Most cats love this and will take to it quickly and suppress the kneeding. Others like it too much and the kneeding worsens. Also, take her to a pet store such as petsmart so she can pick out something to chew/suck on. Let your cat know it is okay for it to put it's mouth on the toy. My cat takes all my stuffed animals and "hides" them for such purposes. I wouldn't worry too much about either. Your cat is just trying to be a cat.

The "marching in place" you're referring to is called kneading. Different people have different terms for it. I've heard "making bread", "making biscuits", and my husband's family has always called it "prancing". It's what kittens do on their mother's belly to help get milk from the nipple. Adult cats do it because some find it soothing. It's the equivalent of an adult human who never outgrew sucking their thumb.
She's probably "nursing" the blanket. I would say this is a definite since she's kneading at the same time. My male kneads a lot....but just kneading. My female, on the other hand, has to have her face shoved into something while she's kneading. It just harkens back to kittenhood.

I have 2 cats... both are 5-6 years old, both male siblings.
One cat does the marching in place when you pet him; he also backs up into you. It's funny because it looks weirdly sexual but it's not. He does this when you pet him.
Now my other cat gets in the blanket with me, and lately, he's been furiously kneeding at the blanket and drooling like hell. The kneeding sucks because he scratches me unless I make him face the other way; the drooling is hell kuz it stinks.
But it seems that quite a few cats do this. Probably his/her way of enjoying themselves.

I have had about 20 cats in my life and only the ones that had been separated from their mother before they were ready, kneaded. And they did all through their lives. I think your cat, misses its mommy!
Right now I have 2 cats, one is 5 and the other is 3 years old. The 5 year-old kneads and wants to be by my side all the time. The other one hates it when I try to pat her! :))

Your cat is going back to infancy. The cat smells something that reminds it of its mother and when kittens are nursing they massage the mothers breast to get the milk out and this is exactly what she is doing she is massaging the blanket to get milk out. Its funny but a lot of cats do this(my two cats do it)

My kitties do the same thing. Its like they're trying to find a comfortable place to lay and if they decide that a certain place isnt comfortable they'll walk away and try another spot! I've stopped trying to understand everything they do. I understand enough to keep them happy and know what is out of the norm for them. other than that I let them do all those strange little things that make them so cute!

Katrina L is right on this one!! Most people call it kneading. It's a way the kittens massage the milk out from their nursing mothers.
