Absolutely..There are a lot of unfit parents out there, but how would you enforce it? Already we feel that only adults should be having children yet that doesn't keep teenagers from screwing around and popping out babies...We would have to give mandatory Depo-shots..or something..Women would have to prove they've had their Depo-Shots every three months..Then when they have reached 21 and passed the mandatory drug screening, home and baby care testing, and counseling sessions then they can get pregnant. One more thing the government would have to do for us, because there are too many people out there who are too idiotic for oxygen privileges..

No, I don't think it is a good idea. How do we know who is going to be a parent anyway? You have people that get married and never parent a child, so how do you know who will get pregnant? Put them all on birth control? Yeah, that doesn't work, I have a 6 yr old running around my house right now that is proof it doesn't. I took a parenting class in high school and to this day, I haven't used what it taught me. Knowing that, it wouldn't be wise for a parent to be to have a license. In order to get it, you would have to take classes and not everyone parents the same. There are too many different styles or parenting to be able to have a license. We do need a license to drive, look how many reckless people are on the roads, we need a license to marry and look how many abuse their wives/husbands or cheat on them. Having a parental license wouldn't change who will or will not harm their children. It would be just another way of the govt. or some "know it all" to come in and decide if you are fit to be a parent. I personally don't think that is right. I parent a lot like my mother did but I parent the majority my own way. I've done a wonderful job with my children, it wouldn't be right for someone to come in a decide that for me. Having that license would give them all rights to decide it.

A marriage license is only to check that you are not related. While alot of people say people should get parent licenses the reality is that would require everyone to act in the same way to every child. Not a really good idea as humanity still needs all kinds of people from all kinds of circumstances to survive and grow. Some people could be very good parents yet very bad at tests.

If you only knew how many times I've said, "You need a license to drive, have to register to vote, but any idiot can have a child!"

But in the practical sense, I don't see how it can be done. I do think parenting classes should somehow be encouraged for all parents. Hospital personal used to make sure you knew how to bathe your baby, change diapers, etc. before you took your infant home...not sure if they still do that or not. But what happens as the child grows older? I just hope that the parents had good parents of their own to base their knowledge on.

I've seen/heard too many parents "lose it" with their children in public. Can't seem to cope with a tantrum/bad behavior. Overreact when it comes to discipline. Ignore their kids in favor of what looks like fun for the adult.

My comment regarding parenting license? A loud YES!!

Good luck with your paper. I hope something good comes of it.

That's a great idea... but wait... then I'd be out of a job =(

Would this license be required before the baby is born or before the person has sex?

But seriously, it would be hard if not impossible to enforce. What if they made it a requirement for parents who lose their kids because of neglect or abuse. It could be one of the steps required to get their kids back and it would help monitor the families once kids go back home (since CPS does not already do this).

That is so funny you asked that question because I was just saying to my husband earlier people should have to get parenting licenses, when I saw some dumb lady leave her newborn in the stroller, walk away to look at something and there wasn't anyone with the baby at all. Mind you, this was at a VERY crowded fair where that baby could have been scoffed up in a heartbeat.

It's a lovely idea but what would you do with all the babies whose parents are not licensed and who cannot afford to do the education to obtain a license?

YES YES YES AND YES! We are separated by animals only in that we can choose if we procreate or not. To produce offspring when one is unwilling or unable to care for said spawn should be considered inhumane and criminal.

It would be tricky to get a parenting license program in place, but I think it would be wonderful.

A more realistic approach would be to stop REWARDING people who can't keep their pants on by getting rid of social benefits and tax benefits for parents. Increase taxes for those who have children based on how many children they have, and people will start thinking before they CHOOSE to pop another one out.

No, but mothers under twenty-one, who receive social assistance, should have to take a parenting class and join a support group for under-aged mothers. They should also look into finishing high school, getting First Aid and taking a life skills course with an emphasis on job-hunting skills, communication in the workplace, interviews and financial and time management.

Judging by some of the questions people are asking here, I'd say yes! People should have to take an IQ test. I really fear for the safety of some of their kids!
