Doing good is both for the Lord and for goodness' sake, but especially for the Lord.
In any case, we wouldn't have known it except the Lord reveal it to us. So, it is done more so for the Lord than for the sake of doing it.

Good question and it goes to the heart of the difference between Christians and athiests. Athiests may choose to do something good for the sake of goodness. Christians, though, do good in response to the love which has been shown them by God. We love because He first loved us. Christians do good out of thankfulness.

Well -- yes and no. Christians try to goodness, remembering only the Lord is good, to make things better on earth and to lay up treasures for themselves in Heaven.

Good Christians tend to be nicer than many people you might meet. However, being nice will not save a person. God wants everyone to love Him and worship Him. A nice person who thinks he can live without God is in as much need of saving (maybe even more so) than a person that is cruel. It's easy to ignore God when everything in life seems to be going well.

Nope. At least not the ones I have known. They do things the way that appeals most to them and throw in bible verses to justify it.

If I am helping somebody out, it is because I want to be doing the same thing that Jesus would do: caring for other people enough to help them out.

Isn't God the source of all goodness, at least in the view of believers?

They do it so that their neighbors can see them and say, "oh, he/she is SO holy."
Most people only do goodness so others will see it. Kudos to the few who don't.
