Over-protective in my eyes is not allowing a child to experience the difficulties of life on their own. Always trying to sheild them from reality by not letting them watch tv, experience outings with friends, giving the child their own space to grow. Parents will die, who will be there then to protect them?

When each and everything a child does is approved and instructed by parents they are over protective. give them a break, some freedom. It will go a long way for a parent to get some respect with the child.

BEING A TRUE PARENT
if you are a real parent you will never let go of your kids dont beat your self up for wanting to know what is going on with your kids and wanting to make sure they are okay believe me when they get older they will trully appreciate the fact they had a parent that cared enough to be in there business all the time

Protective to the point where the childs freedom, and ability to grow and learn lessons on thier own is over-powered by thier parents the vast majority of the time.

If the parent protects the child to the point where the child's growth is being stiffled.
Where the child potentially learns that it is better to fear EVERYTHING instead of taking healthy or calculated risks.

Very simple - by not allowing the child to grow up and be his/her own person, the right to experience life as it is intended for him/her; all because of the parent's own paranoia.

Wow...now-a-days...so much can happen! I think you have to bring them up with good morals, a little fear, and then have a lot of faith that you did your job well, God is watching over them and no matter what your plan for their life is, his will take over. Some people live to 100 and fly by the seat of their pants and others do everything right and don't see past their teens...it's not our decision..

Sorry, there's no simple answer to this question. It's kinda like beauty... all in the eye (or mind in this case) of the beholder.

Not letting your children do anything that they might want to do. My mom wouldn't let us do anything, we couldn't go to the movies or go to dances and we were not even aloud to touch a deck of cards. That is all I can tell you.

To me an overprotective parent is someone who is always afraid for their child's safety, health, & happiness, and they take it to extremes, like me, lol.
I am very overprotective of my baby. I don't let him out of my sight. He's not allowed to go to people's homes who smoke, even family. I am very particular about who holds him. Who touches his hands because he puts them in his mouth......
