You mean the new ones? If you opt for the new 3.5 liter V6, then most definately! Fastest SUV in it's class. Much faster than the BMW X3 3.0.
The older ones were good too. Very reliable. Low Maintinence.

As a general rule, yes. Toyota has a great reputation.
There have been three major RAV4 designs...the Classic 1996-2000, the updated 2001-2005, and the totally revamped 2006.
The 2006 is bigger and more powerful to compete with the Honda CRV, but I was disappointed that the 5-speed manual tranny was dropped, and it is no longer recommended for off-roading. Obviously, they're going for a different demographic.
And this leaves a gap in Toyota's lineup, with no small SUV comparable to the Hyundai Tucson.
But for everyday hauling, and a comfortable SUV that should need little maintenance, I'd recommend the RAV4 to most people.
The reliability record is outstanding, and they retain their value as used cars.

Rav4's have good reliability, good gas mileage, last forever etc. but the older ones were on the small side and very underpowered. Very little leg room in the back, small cargo area. The new improved ones 06 and up, are wider, longer and more powerful. I would drive the newer v6 ones, but if your looking at a used one, look more into the 2001+ CRV's
