My four year old has a mucousy stool streaked with blood and no other symptoms. This started today.any clues?
no fever, no stomach pain.
Of course I've taken her to the doctor, we're waiting for the results from the stool sample. I'm not an idiot, just anxious.

Of course you are not an idiot. All us mums would do the same thing while waiting for the results ... ie searching the internet for answers

(how did our parents do it without the net for reassurances).

Now to answer your question, it is most likely just an infection and your Dr will most likely give her antibiotics (ask her Dr if it's absolutely necessary before accepting the prescription for antibiotics- you want to keep antibiotics away from children).

The worst case scenario isn't worth discussing with you because it will only make you more anxious and it is extremely UNLIKELY to be the cause at her age.

Probably drinking too much milk and not getting enough fiber. Stool can tear the insides of the colon and intestinal tract if it is not soft enough. Try a stool softener or back off on his protein intake.

Often, what you see in kid's stool, is a result of something they have eaten. Maybe the red isn't blood at all but food coloring from something she/he has eaten?
Think hard about everything your punkin has eaten today. Especially anything red. I have heard that cereals with so called 'berries' and 'marshmallows' can cause colored stools in kids. Deserts with red colored fillings can also be a culprit.
Let's pray that's all it is.
God Bless you and your wee 'punkin'.

The best thing you did was take her to the Drs. It could be she just strained her self or something she ate . But the test will tell. Good luck Pem
