Is it crowded with tourists like the Hawaiian Islands?

Oh my gosh, I was never afraid in Belize except on the mainland. On Ambergris Caye there was great snorkeling. You do have to go on a boat to get to it though. Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world! Also I have heard that the snorkeling at the blue hole was fantastic.

While I was there we went on a trip to see the ruins or the manatees or something like that, and on the way we stopped to snorkel at a little island called Coco Sol also called Queen Elizabeth island. This was the most spectacular display of coral and fish I have ever seen. You have to request it from your tour guide though.

When we were there, we went with Hustler Tours, and pretty much you could just get your friends together and split a tour to wherever you wanted. Or, if you didn't have friends you were with they had organized tours that went to specific places. I would definitely go back to that island though- in a heartbeat.

For refernce I have also been snorkeling in Cozumel, Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and this was by far the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

And while you are in Belize go to Shark Ray Alley. You can swim with the nurse sharks and rays. Not to be missed. It is just off of Ambergris Caye in the Hol Chan marine reserve. Awesome!

Have fun!

Stay out of Belize city and you should find it neither crowded nor threatening. I'll second the suggestions to visit Ambergris Caye, although I hear that San Pedro, where I stayed about 10 years ago, has become much more developed.

The Blue Hole, although a fascinating site for scuba diving, is not really worth the effort for snorkelling. If you're a snorkeller who's part of a group that's doing scuba, then you'll probably have fun snorkelling around it, but there's other stuff that's easier to get to and just as nice.

I liked Belize a lot. I'd also recommend Roatan.

I have traveled all of central america and the caribbean, never in my life have I been so afraid that the natives were going to kill me for the few dollars I had in my pocket as when I was in Belize. I will not go back.

Besides there's better diving in Roatan.

Unfortunately, I've never been to Belize, and I don't even know anything about it, sorry.
