I personally stay away from new versions of Windows until they've been out for at least a year or so. Wait for them to get all their bugs worked out.
I got Windows Vista Beta for free, but I don't know if the Beta is still available. And I had major problems with finding drivers for Vista, so I couldn't get certain things working, like my sound card. So, now I'm back to Windows XP. Windows Vista didn't really give me anything new, I felt.
If you absolutely want Vista, and even if you can't legally get it for free, you can still get it cheap. If you are in college or know someone in college, you can get a major discount on Microsoft products by purchasing with the Education discount. This was available for products like Microsoft Office, but I'm not sure if this will be available for Windows Vista.

Unless you signed up for the beta testing? Nope.
I'd figure the most efficient way to get Vista and the proper upgrades is to just buy a whole damn new computer in one fell swoop.
Don't buy it when it just comes out though, that's definitely a waste. Wait a year or two after release.

No, it is not worth it. Probably when you get a new computer it will come pre-installed anyway.
People will still be using Windows XP for many more years anyway.
If you want a free option, try Ubuntu. There is a new 3D desktop project called compiz (and a fork called beryl) that is even nicer looking than Vista.

From what I have seen / tested, I'll be sticking with XP for a while. It takes 512 Mb of RAM to even install and runs like crap unless you have 1 Gb. That alone is enough to make me think the OS is kinda bloated. XP really impressed me on how OLD of computer hardware you can install it on and it still works just as well. Vista you have to have the latest and greatest for it to even work 'normal'.

I would wait for a while until they work the kinks out and as for upgrading, you could probably buy a new computer for not much more than what the upgrade would cost--and it will probably have vista on it.

NO, don't. THe new Operation system probably still has lots of bugs. Wait for a few month and see what users are saying about it. No, I do not thing there is any free way to get it (maybe unless you are a pro who is helping Microsoft reviewing the OS).
