I work at an elementary school and the fifth and sixth grade girls dress in mini skirts and low cut shirts. I think that its a little inapropriate for girls that age to be wearing clothing like that. Am I the only one who thinks that? This is at a rather prestegious private school.

For me it is more about providing positive models for these girls. Tv sex symbols are terrible models, more girls unfortunately would choose to Idolize Brittney Spears then a doctor. Many parents seem to support this.

I agree with you - and I don't blame the girls, but the parents. I have a friend who has 3 daughters and she is pretty strict with them - no spaghetti straps or tank tops, no minis or 'short' shorts.

I wish most parents would do this as well - after all we send kids to school to get educated - not learn how to walk the ramp!

My 12 yr old dtr attends a public middle school, they wear uniforms. At every dance the principal is at the door monitoring the dress of every child before they are allowed entry. If the child is not dressed according to the dress code issued at the beginning of the year, the child has to call someone to come back and get them. The child is not allowed into the dance. Period.
I'll be honest, I was blown away when she brought this dress code home, I couldn't believe that some one finally had the courage to do such a thing. Besides, if she can bend over and I see her panties, lifts her arms and I see her belly button, or so low cut I see cleavage I personally take that item of clothing and it is gone. She can wear what she wants when she is out of my house, until then she'll dress like the young LADY she is.
I'm not a prude, I just believe that if you look like you're asking for trouble then you're damn sure going to find it. What is appropriate for a 17 or 18 yr old isn't necessarily appropriate for a teeny bopper. There are too many freaks out there and I don't want to have to kill one of them.

I don't know what it's like over there, but there are a lot of places here in Australia where that's all they sell for little girls. I find it disgusting that companies even make them let alone the parents buying them! Heck, it's bad enough when teenagers wear things like that. Why can't we just dress our kids as lady like (and hope that they end up turning out that way) before they get old enough to rebel and wear mini's and cleveage tops?!?!? Kids in primary school should not dress older than their age. Let them wear jeans and play in the mud people!!!

I am in 8th grade and I totally agree with you. Children do not need to be looking this way. I don't dress this way the only skin I am aloud to show is my arms, below knees, and a short v neck shirt. Kids should not look this way it is "skimpy", and there parents really should pay attention or care about what they wear. A lot of girls in my grade show a little to much chest and stomach. Girls should not show so much chest in school they are not at school to be porn stars. Schools do need to care a little more then they do.

i think all schools should have a uniform dress code!
school is about education NOT who is the sluttiest looking in the bunch(sorry for my wording on that, i just dont know how else to get my point across on this)
the principles should send them home anytime they are inappropriately dresssed and the point will be made to dress better, hopefully by the parents if they trully care about thier childrens education and not just thier looks for school!

on another note: ALSMOM you RULE!!! i commend your type of thinking and courage to actually take away and make sure your child is properly dressed before leaving your home..i am glad to see that there are still some people in the right mind to take action on this subject.

i totally agree. i have a young son and there are even some questionably clothed little girls in his class. i think that something should be done...stricter dress code. as a parent i want my child to look the best he can. why don't others feel the same. i guess maybe when they're young it's cute but then when they start to develop it's too late to change? anyway, i have to back you up on this.

The school can't be too prestigious if it has no dress code rules. My kids go to public school and are not allowed to wear that stuff because of school rules.

You should see how high the catholic school girls hike up those skirts after school though. UGH!

I agree, if the parents are not going to encourage better dress codes the schools will and im sure the kids wont like that. I would never let my daughter (6th grade) dress inappropriately. She has more things to concern herself about other than boys and looking sexy..

I think parents need to enforce rules about dress, not a uniform but rules like: skirt needs to be to close to knees, no tube tobs/spaghetti straps, shirt must touch pants etc, and schools should enforce these rules also.

I totally agree with you!! Style or not, I wouldn't let my 12 or 13 year old out of the house like that!. There are plenty of stylish clothes to wear without looking trashy!
