If you are in the US, you can get a car history report for about $10 from:
http://www.carfax.com
You will need the VIN number for this, which can be found on your title. I'm not sure it shows the actual owners but it does indicate if there were any previously known issues. The last owner before you should be the person that was listed on the title you had to sign to put the car in your name. In countries other than the US, the title/reg will actually list all previous owners.

i don't know if carfax can tell you exactly WHO owned it...but it can tell you how many times the title's been transferred, and any accident history.
