i have 5, and i'm not going to lie...it stings! if you think about it, you're basically paying a person to hit you thousands of times (often over the same area) with several needles. how much it hurts...well, that depends on your pain toleracne. most tattoo artists will tell you that you should get something relatively small the first time, and place it somewhere that 1: it looks good, and 2: you can cover up if you need to! think long and hard about what you have placed on your body. it should have meaning to you, even if nobody else knows the meaning, or even cares. when you go to get it, take somebody who is close to you, and has been in tattoo shops before. the shop should be clean!!! they should use NEW needles, and sterilize the equipment on sight in an autoclave. if they don't want to answer your questions, turn around and walk out! if they don't show you the new needles in the packaging, walk out. and most importantly, if you feel uncomfortable when you are in there...WALK OUT!!!!! this is your body, nobody elses! don't allow yourself to feel pressured by anybody, including yourself! i've walked out of many shops because i wasn't comfortable. it's no biggie...they do understand that not everybody is comfortable in every environment. just take your time, talk to people you know that have a tat, and do your research! it never hurts to be over-prepared, but it could hurt you if you walk into this blindly. good luck!

Make sure that they use many techniques in order to keep everything clean and safe. I would not recommed a place on the side of a boardwalk or something (Like at a beach) esp when they do it for a really low price. Although it might be nice and tempting to go to a place that is cheap..it is most likely cheap for a reason and the last thing you will need is an infection. As far as the p[ain goes....it depends how you tolerate it. It isnt the most confortable thing let me put it that way but it isnt all too bad.

I normally don't try to stop people from doing what they feel is right for them, but I would think about this if I were you. I know you are thinking that a tatoo will look cool or even sexy right now (20 or 30 years old), but what about when you reach 60 or 70. Have you ever seen an older person with a tatoo? It is not a pretty sight. Especially when they are at the beach with their grandchildren. Anyway, just think about it before you jump into it. They are very expensive to remove.

My daughter wanted to get a duck tattooo. Can you imagine being a 65-year-old with a duck on your ***? How stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, if you are the least bit overweight and wind up losing weight after the tatto, what will the tattoo look like? A shrivelled up prune maybe?
Think twice, or maybe three times, that is all I am saying. A tattoo lasts a long, long time............it is a greater commitment than a marriage.

I have one on my foot. I had been to a few tattooist who said they wouldn't do it there as a first tattoo as it would be too painful. Well that was a load of bull. It does depend of course on your pain threshold. I have a pretty high one and managed to find someone who would do it. The outlining is worse than the colouring in, the colouring in kinda just tickles. I ate my dinner while he did mine. I think getting your navel or tongue pierced is worse. Seriously if ya really want one go for it. Just make sure they are professional and have a really hygienic practise.

I do not have a tattoo, but I would like to give my opinion. I have seen many tattoo's on men and women and it seems that in a very short period of time they start to have a blurred look to them, they loose the original niceness to them. Also I work with old people and old wrinkly skin looks REALLY bad with tattoo's. So if you really want one go for it, but it is kind of a life time commitment. Good Luck.

I have one on my inner ankle and would get more if I knew what to get. It hurts more the closer to the bone you get. Honestly if you just relax it's not so bad. Get one somewhere that won't be saggy in 20 years. Ask how they sterilize their needles and ask about what they do with the leftover ink. I heard that some places just throw the leftover ink back in with the rest. Gross!! That's like throwing blood back into the ink pot.

I have a small rose on my back (shoulder blade) Yes unfortunatly it does hurt. Make sure you go to a place with "clean" needles. In other words, someone who does not use the same needle as he/she did on someone else.

i have one on my mid/upper back. i can tell you that if it is something simple that you want it doesn't really hurt. the outline of mine didn't hurt at all. but when you want color and a lot of detail they have to go over and over the same spot....that hurts. oh, and my advice is to get something that actually means something to you, not just some random thing...good luck!
