The Catholic Church allows marriage between Catholics and non-Catholics.

Because the Church recognizes the tremendous challenge that the interfaith couple will face, they may have to get permission from the bishop.

With love in Christ.

If they are getting married in the Catholic church, he will be required to convert. I am not entirely sure why but that is the rule of the church. My mother was Buddhist and had to convert to marry my father in the Catholic church. However, a friend of mine who is Catholic chose to marry a Hindu man and they had a Hindu service outside of the Catholic church. It's up to the couple what they want to do.

And to all those people who put down formal religions, it really does no one any good to "hate on" another religion. Accept that there are differences and that the churches are what they are. You can believe or not, choose to worship as you will, no one is saying you HAVE to do anything. If you don't want to convert, don't convert. If you don't want to practice Catholicism then why do you want to be married in the Catholic church in the first place? These are the real questions.

I had an ex-colleague who is a pious Catholic. Her husband's also from India and he's a devout Hindu. Their marriage is perfectly fine. Aside from the little hindu statue they keep in the kitchen, there isn't any other religious items in the house.

I asked my ex-colleague if the difference in religion had caused them any inconvenience, she said her husband had been compromising as much as she did. For instance, she allowed him to have the hindu statue in the kitchen while he agreed to enrol their daughter in a Catholic kindergarten. They also agreed that their daughter gets to choose her own religion when she gets older. So disputes over religious beliefs were almost non existent.

My ex-colleague's faith in God hasn't dwindled even though she married a hindu. In fact, she gave up a highly paid job to do social work. She believes that her religion is her personal relationship with God and it shouldn't involve her partner.

Not to hate on the catholic church, but they are jerks. They are not going to marry your friend to a Hindu man. They will only marry her if he is a catholic, and the promise to have children. The Catholic church makes up a lot of stuff, for example they teach that using any kind of birth control is a sin.

Well, I'm atheist so I really don't know their customs and beliefs concerning intermarriage. In my own personal opinion, I think you should be free to marry the one you love. Period. I hope things work out favorably for your friends.
