Today my wife left $4.00 in quarters for a tip at a restarrant. I told her, "I wouldn't do that." She smiled and said, "I would". She did.
Any thoughts from servers?
(The reason my wife left the tip is we've been married 16 years. Each year I have less and less in my wallet, she gets more and more in hers. She pays everytime we eat out now.)

It would depend on how much the bill came to. If the bill was $50, then $4 in any denomination would stink. If it is a fair tip, the server can always cash in the change right then or at the end of the night. When I waited tables and managed a fast paced restaurant, most of the servers didn't care how the tip got there, so long as it got there.

As a server, I would not be that offended if someone left me $4 in quarters. I do get irritated, however, when people leave me all the spare change that was in the bottom of their purse that adds up to about $2.38 or so... Keep in mind that we can change that money in at the end of the night if we want. For the most part, all the servers I know keep their change seperate and keep it for the next time they work. Either that, or they put their change into a piggy bank every night and turn it in when they go on vacation!!

Well, it's probably easier for the servers to handle currency, but I think they're happy being tipped at all. Neither would be a problem for *me,* but I'm not as uptight as others. I guess (as others have said) the servers could exchange the coin for currency, and the managers would probably enjoy not having to get as much change at the bank, but I'd still tip with currency.

In the case of having coin "left over," I'd use the coins to help pay the bill and leave currency as a tip. The restaurant's not going to argue if you're not stiffing them on the check, are they?

Remember: Please tip your servers and bartenders! (Heh heh.....)

Maybe having all that jingling coins is weird but hey any legitimate form of money would do. Quarters are very useful though when buying certain items, say a soda, snack, laundry or any other product. It's perfectly fine to pay in quarters though. Pennies in four dollars is a totally different situation though.

Actually most servers don't get a pay check.

We make about $2/hour and it generally all goes to taxes.

I get a paycheck every week that says "Non Negotiable" because my measly little hourly wage has gone to the federal and state government.

If you can't afford to tip -- stay home and cook your own damn food!!

I think its insulting to get change as a tip. Where exactly is the server supposed to put it?

It all spends the same, just as long as it's the right amount. Besides, servers can always cash in their tips for larger bills before they go home.

You lucky SOB! Your wife pays to take you out. I've worked table before and money is money. I also work cash registers at the restaraunt and can make my own change into bills without a managers key.

A tip is a tip and the servers can usually cash in change for larger bills..at least in the restraunt I go to they can. so it doesn't matter the coin...

Cool your jets, 8 bits is the same as $2; bet the waitress used it for kids lunches, snacks, etc., or simply changed it at the register
Seems we REALLY hav to start hunting for things to worry and gripe about as WE (me too) get older..
