If you say it in a mean or sarcastic way he will probably eat more. I would say do in in a nonchalant way like... Prepare more fruit and salads or order them when you go out. Suggest the two of you go walking or jogging ect... Suggest a healthy new outlook and maybe he will get the hint ! good luckl

Would depend on why you would want to tell him that? Is it for health reasons or is it that you would find him more attractive?
If for health reasons, ask him to see a doctor for instructions and the doctor will tell him the reasons and how much he needs to loose,
If for attractiveness, he may be happy with the way he looks? Ask him

"For your health honey, you need to lose some weight."
if it's not for health, then imagine how you would take it if someone said 'you need to lose some weight around your hips honey.' there is no nice way to say this, right?
