You have to create a paper space viewport the approximate size of your paper. It helps to have template files already created so that you know how big to make the viewport. If you don't need an exact scale, select "scale to fit" in the viewport toolbar. I don't know if this will help you or not without knowing more. in the print dialog there in the plot area select the option you want (display, window, limits or extents)
once you get that move over to the plot scale area. If you are not concerned with a scale just select the fit to papter check button, that should fill your selected paper size with the plot area.
if not you need to use your desired scale.
