Bound's hubby here:

This is for New Jersey.

When you go to apply you will:
1. be finger-printed
2. fill out an application
3. complete a couple of releases
4. contribute about $75 to the state of New Jersey

What the state will do is:
1. check your finger-prints against the F.B.I. data bank
2. complete a mental health background check to make sure you've not been institutionalized
3. send out and await reply for two letters of reference to people of your choosing
4. take up to six months or more before they notify you of whether you are approved or not despite what the statute says.

What all this get you is a permit to purchase that is valid for 90 days for a single handgun, this permit does not give you the right to carry a handgun on your person.

In the state of New Jersey, it is almost impossible for a private citizen to get a permit to carry. If you are honest and say you want the permit to purchase so you can protect yourself, typically the permit to purchase will be denied.

you may desire to be 21 buddy. Federal regulation. Now on the different hand, you may own handguns at 18 in some states, yet you won't be able to legally carry them... or purchase them from a broker. ultimate you sling a shotgun over your lower back whilst working. If on inner maximum assets, then do despite the hell you like. That little old guy in the lower back of my head is attempting desperately tell me some thing... he's often the guy who calls bulls**t on issues too... hmm...

It depends on the state. In Indiana, the local police department run a background check and take your finger prints...this in turn is sent to the state police and they also do a background check. If all is OK, you get your permit in 6-8 weeks. Not a big deal...but again, it depends on the state.

Depends what State. But you will be fingerprinted and sometimes interviewed by the Chief of Police or Sheriff. Than your application goes to the State Police for the background check. Sometimes it is up to you to send the information in to receive your permit.

Finger prints taken and submitted to the FBI and local authorities to make sure you are not a convicted violent criminal. Questions asked to make sure you are mentally stable. For example: Have you ever been a patient in a mental institution. You also have to show that you have had training in the use of hand guns.
