She has no right to forge one of your checks for any reason. I would definitely press charges because if you don't she may keep doing it.

Wow. Do you think she was really worried about your personal tragedy when she stole your check? I highly doubt it. The proper thing for her to do would have been to ask to borrow the money. Family doesn't steal from one another and you need to teach her a lesson. I'm guessing that this girl has done things like this in the past. Three year old or no three year old, she needs to be taught a lesson. This behavior isn't acceptable. I also don't think there is going to be too much tension caused if you pursue this. I'm sure half the family is already talking about how untrustworthy she is....they'll understand. As for the girl getting jail time? That's not going to happen. She'll get a fine, have a record and maybe do community service as well as probation, but she sounds as though she needs it to open her eyes. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to go through witht his honey. You sound like a good person, who wants to do the right thing...so do it. Don't enable her to do this again....because you know as well as I do, that if given the chance, she will...especially if she knows there are no real consequences. Good luck!

press charges and let the DA choose what to do.
Person broke the law, stole something and even forged something. She deserves any punishment she gets for her actions. Fact she is family or has a child is not your concern, that is her concern as she is the only one responsible for her actions.
And if she really needed the money that bad, she could of easily asked. Not to mention many states if not all have laws against shutting off of utilities if children under 5 are in the house as that is considered child abuse.
Sounds like she wanted money and she took you for a sap to get it.

Bottom line is she could have asked,no one will refuse someone money if you know you have a 3 yr old baby and need to pay utilities, better yet she could have asked to stay over for the period of time, and if you do not need her around, you would have probably given her money anyway, why not ask your husband ?if he does not have he would have asked you....she would have done with or without financial problems....press charges.

She should have asked to borrow the money if she needed it because of her son.
She had no regards for you & the trouble you would be in with no money in the bank to cover checks that you wrote. Tell her you're going to turn her in if she doesn't pay you in a certain amount of time, then offer to keep her son for her while she's in jail. See if that will show her you're serious & make her pay you back.

i would make sure what she says is true about the utilities but also maybe if you feel as if you need justice how about having her sign a promise note that holds up in court incase she doesnt want to pay like she says im a firm believer in not sending family to jail but then again screw me once shame on you screw me twice shame on me...go with what your heart says think with your heart not with your anger cause anger makes us a bigger fool than sins of the heart

If you don't "nip-it-in-the-bud" she may do it to you again... so, press charges.
She said she'd pay you back... but, if you think she's trustworthy, think again... if she were an honest person, she would have just come to you in the first place, told you the problem & asked for a loan... instead of sneaking behind your back.

Do it! Ram her in the rear. No mercy. That beyotch has it coming and has to learn not to steal. If you don't teach her now, she'll learn a tougher lesson next time. Throw er in the slammer.

You could always take her to small claims court and not press charges, but you may want to consult an atty.
