It's just an old mohammed marketing scheme.

Well, there's a bit of a dispute about that. It seems there might have been a mistake in transcribing the part of the Holy Qu'ran which mentions this. The word could mean either "virgin" or "raisin". I think it's probably "raisin" because raisins are highly prized by desert people; and I think it would be poetic justice if these so-called martyrs were handed 72 raisins instead of falling into the charms of 72 virgins.

First of all you should know that these 70 virgins for a martyr thing was one of sort of short speeches said by the messenger Mohammad NOT mentioned in Koran at all!
back at that time 70 or so was a big number, you know, sort of telling someone "I called you like a zillion times", so i think the point was to let people know that should they fight to defend (themselves, their families, their land, their property, their women, their religion and other weak people who asks for their help without being unjust because Allah doesn't like those who transgress... there are rules for Muslims when they fight) and be killed or become martyrs, they will be rewarded a "huge number" of what they like.
but those who believe in heavens believe that they will be granted anything they want. could even be more than 70 virgins.
As for where they come from, God made heaven with what's in it for those who believe in one god and do good, so those virgins are created by god.

Seen this question several times
==================
Hello dear friend:
I understand your question and trust me I was puzzled by that too. I am a convert LOL. I wanted to answer your question like this: The perfection of Islam dictates that it have a motivation for every type of person including those that are not motivated except through sensory reward, which is the common lot whether people deny it or not, and the principle of Paradise as reward for martyrs is also very much present in everyones doctrine. However, Paradise in Islam also describes a higher level called ridwan i.e. the lavishing of Divine good pleasure, to which we pray that Allah guide us. This means that paradise will look to you in whatever way you want it and to others in whatever way they want it. I think the 72 virgins thing was used as an example for those people who are moved by those types of things. And the virgins called Huries are just servants or maidens not really the concept of "Virgins" as you might be thinking of this are just helpers. Paradise in a sense is whatever you want it to be :) there are different levels of rewards for each person. For example I stay at home and just clean and cook and I am good ... But you go to work and you help the needy and you take care of your family and you are kind to others... should your reward not be greater than mine in heaven???? Is just an example you know :) I did a lot of research and my conclusion is this... let me try to worry about being good myself help people in this world if they need anything the hungry, the poor, the sick and then May God reward me or punish me in the next :) ---Let me know if you need to know anything else that I can respond. I will check back your post. GREAT QUESTION!

Dead nuns. That's why the 72 virgins bit isn't really such a great deal... most nuns kick-off in their 70s or 80s. How would you like to be swarmed by 72 horny octogenarians?
I hear that there's a shortage right now, what with all the suicide bombers and such... I've been led to believe that in such cases, they substitute nubile goats.

first, the 72 virgins thing is a myth.
second, the "most pious and graceful" companions mentioned in the quran are for everyone who makes it to heaven, not just men, and not just martyrs. they are called hooris, and as far as i can tell from my research, the word has no gender.

I wondered the same thing. How do you get an entire country to BELIEVE something like that? Are they pumping opium into the air to get everyone to believe it? I bet the women are wondering themselves....but they can't say anything or they'll get their head chopped off.

The true answer is of course that they don't, they just go into the void like all of us, atheist, jew, muslim or xian because Islam is just as false as all the other religions.
My favourite joke answer is that they are all former catholic nuns.
