now you can go with the straight six 300 but they get about the same millage as a small block v8 , so the question is what do you do with the truck? I-6 have the most low end torque, compared to the horse power of v-8s it all depends on what you want to do .. also for fuel economy you have to look at two barrel
compared to four barrel carburetor, a six cylinder will have a two barrel at the most and a v-8 will have either a 2 or four barrel,

Its not just the size of the engine but what ratio do you have in the rear end. For example if you have a 410 rear end you are going to be using quite a bit of gas no matter what engine you put in it. If you had a 208 or a 273 rear end it might be a little tall for the 300cid inline 6 to pull. I would go with a small V8 and gear the rear end for hiway driving. That way you have the power to pull those tall gears but the engine wont have to work to hard so it should be economical to drive.

It depends what size of engine it preveously had in it, modification to adapt a different size engine can get expensive. If speed or power isn't an issue then I would go with a 250 or 300 six cylinder. good luck
