Some of the answers so far are 100% wrong. Caffeine is the substance in coffee that is both a stimulant and a diuretic, which causes more urine flow and moves fluids out of the body. This would reduce fluid retention, but enough caffeine in coffee or anything else would make you too jumpy to be useful to treat fluid retention. It can also increase heart rate and blood pressure.
Many over the counter premenstrual relief products contain caffeine because it makes aspirin and acetaminophen work better and it has this diurertic effect.

Coffee is a diuretic, if you drink the stuff you will have to go to the restroom soon. Funny thing about water is that it does the same thing. The interesting thing is that the body can not "bank" coffee or water or any liquid. So there is no water retention. The body filters it and "restroom here I come". It also has some other side effects. Since it contains caffeine, it is most likely to perk you up after a period of 20 +- minutes. It is likely to increase your blood pressure as well which is a negative for your heart. If you try to perk yourself up after a few drinks to be alert, you will not succeed, but only become an inebriated and awake individual. Lucky, coffee does not have any calories so you will not gain weight.

Um...caffeine is a diuretic, which causes your body to get rid of water. It is not recommended as a cure for water retention however, as it has too many stimulant side effects.
Try cutting back on salt in the diet to prevent water retention.

Drink 8 glasses of water a day. When the body knows that it will be getting a constant supply of water, it is less likely to store it. It's like what happens when you starve yourself, then start packing on the pounds when you start eating again. The body is preparing for the next time that it will be without food. Same thing with water retention - it is storing up for the next drought. Keep giving your body water, and it will be less likely to hold on to the excess.

If it's decaffeinated, it will cause retention. However, coffee in itself is an appetite suppressant, so get some decaf!
