My 12 yr. old 37" Sony television has never needed repair until now. The color has left; it shows only black and white pictures, except for a 3" round burgundy spot in each corner. Do I need a new picture tube? I've unpluged it on occasions to reboot it, but the color doesn't return. Is there an inexpensive way to remedy this? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Sounds like your picture tube is broken, which means you'll need a new one. That will be bit pricy, so unfortunately your best bet will probably be a new one. TVs nowadays only have a shelf life of about 10 years, so actual you have been quite fortunate.

I have repaired TVs for 45 years, in that time quite a few Sony's, I can understand the B/W picture - that could be anything from a dry joint in the chroma section to very possibly just the fine tune off set ! Component failure is rare on Sony CTVs most faults were caused by dry joints ! . Now the 3ins round spots in each corner is a fault that I can not visualise because it does not sound possible ! however if your description is accurate then the only conceivable thing would be that the shadow mask ( actually Sony's don't use a shadow mask as such ), they used a system of suspended wires in place of a mask which is why trinitron tubes could only be made in the smaller sizes due to the wires sagging when they got hot which caused similar faults to your description , now this is all supposition and I may be off track. if the mask has gone out shape then you need a new tube or as the other answers indicate a new TV . Hope this helps ! If not then I have had a little extra typing practise ! Regards Pete

This sounds normal for a 12 yr old tv. The tube is going. It will be cheaper just to buy a new tv. Tube tvs are becoming a thing of the past. Sony does not make tube tvs anymore and other companies are following. You'll save more by just buying a new tv or buy a used tube tv that still works! Try garage saling!

Sounds like the Sony KDVXXXXX series television sets. Problem is not with the picture tube but with worn capciitors
in the off line power supply. Too bad you are so far away. I could probably fix it for you for a reasonable fee. Maybe your best bet is to scrap it due to it's age. Whatever you do, do not buy a
Phillips brand tv...... I have sent too many to the landfill. Quit my
position as an authorized Phillips sevice center.

It'll probably cost you more to fix it than it will cost to replace it. Besides, newer TV's are more energy saving in general than those of your age.

NOTHING IS WRONG WITH CRT
PLEASE CHECK THE COLOR SYSTEM FIRST
IT MIGHT BE CHANGED BY MISTAKE
PLEASE FIX IT AT 'AUTO'
IF PROBLEM REMAINS
THEN YOU MUST VISIT REPAIR SHOP
IT WON'T COST MORE BECAUSE YOUR PIC.TUBE IS OK
GOOD LUCK
