Quickly; Possibly. The point of reading is not about what is in the book that may make it bad, but to enrich one's mind to the world of knowledge. If the book for pointless assignments, then no. Why expose already overexposed children to violence and sex? But if it is being read to view the world in a different way (a project on violence in today's world, the changing face of the American conscience, or the police force and what it means to society), then yes. It really comes down to why the book is being read.

chances are he's been exposed to everything in the book already through television and movies (see also the movie of the same name starring johnny depp). There is probably some fowl language, strong violence, some scenes with drugs and drug references, and maybe some sex. Nothing you Wouldn't see or hear on a prime time cop drama on any major network.

A lot depends upon the kid and what his or her parents feel comfortable with. Some 13 year olds would be mature enough to handle it, but some would not. If he/she is interested in it, it would most likely be fine.

yes... you cannot protect them from the world forever. if the kids are reading (and can understand what they are reading)... that is a good thing. sometimes life drops an F-bomb.
p.s.- kids talk like sailors when the adults are not around.
p.s.s. - i have to say... retrodragonfly has a great solution. i gave her a thumbs up!

I got in trouble for reading the Godfather when I was 12.
If the kid has been exposed to foul language and violence and knows when they are appropriate, I don't see why not.

depends on the 13 year old
if it was for a school assignment, I think it wouldn't be a good idea because not all the kids would be ready for that content.

I think it's fine. I'm 14 and it sounds interesting to me because i want to get into law. So if it doesn't have anything really bad in it then yes i think its fine.
