That really shouldn't be taken off but if you must you need to go to your Add/Remove programs and click Add/Remove Windows Components and check Window Media Player. I have not tried it but that should work.
*I strongly recommend you don't do this*

Looks like "LadyFirst", who answered below me shows the procedure for rolling back the player. The procedure indicates to go to add/remove programs in the control pannel, then click show updates. When this is selected, the media player is shown as an update under Microsoft Windows, and can be selected.
My answer doesnt remove the player, but disables it.
I have version 10, but should be the same as in 11.
You can change the types of files that the Media Player will recognize, and try to play. Just unselect them, and the program will not automatically try to play that content.
Open the player.
At the top of the Media Player window, right click. A menu should pop up, and you can choose:
Tools,
Options,
Then in the next dialog box, at the top, choose: File Types
Another dialog box will appear, and you can de-select any file type you dont want.
If you have another media player, and you want it to run those files....
Open Windows Explorer ( not internet Explorer).
On the menu at the top, choose:
Tools
Folder Options
File Types
Here you can reselect which software program works with each file type. Just reassign the file extension you want to the program you wish to use.
For example, notepad may be your default application for opening TXT files, but you can change it to WordPad if you want.
Easy,
May the force be with you.....

~ First off, Windows Media Player is a feature of the Windows operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, depending upon which version of the Player and Windows that you are using, you should be able to roll back to the version of the Player that was previously on your computer. The procedure varies depending upon which version of the Player you are running.

Like the others said, go to add/remove. On left side of that dialog box click on "add/remove windows components", scroll down to Windows Media Player and uncheck it.

If it came with it preinstalled i don't think you can uninstall it. Unless you upgraded it your self. Then you can downgrade it to the one it came preinstalled. It can't come off.
