Im going to be traveling to Portland Oregan next month and would like to know what some of the best sightseeing spots are. I am particularly interested in waterfalls, and ocean views with rocks. Any suggestions? Any other beautiful site will do also. I will only be there for a few days. thanks!

I agree, Multnomah falls MUST be on your list to see. It's only about 30 minutes EAST of the airport on Highway 84. You'll be driving up "the Gorge" (on Highway 84) to get there. However, if you ask around you should be able to get directions to the "old scenic highway" that will take you along a windy road where you'll see several waterfalls AND have some great views of the Columbia River gorge from Crowne Point. The small highway starts near the town of Troudale (and the Sandy River). After about 30 - 45 minutes of scenic driving on this old highway you'll end up at Multnomah falls. You can hike to the top of the falls if that interests you (and you're in shape). To return to Portland (faster) just hop on Highway 84 and you're back in town in no time at all.

Cannon Beach, Oregon is about 90 minutes WEST of the airport. There is a state park there called, Ecola State Park. It has AMAZING views of the rugged and serene Oregon Coast. The little town of Cannon Beach is also very nice. Lots of shops, art galleries, etc. It is very quaint. Most buidings are very "Cape Cod" in appearance. It's the best of the Oregon Coast. (Washington Coast = mostly boring). Oh yeah, Cannon Beach has Hastack Rock too.

Have fun! Be sure to vist downtown Portland too, including Nike Town and NW 23rd Street (trendy shops).

Do the Mt. Hood Loop. Take Highway 26 east. Definitely go up to Timberline, the ski lodge built by the CCC during FDR administration and the crown jewel of the Forest Service, after Timberline continue E on 26 to Hwy 35. Take that to Hood River and check out the windsurfers. Cross the Columbia River and go West on Washington Highway 14 to Bridge of the Gods. Cross back into Oregon and get on I-84 West. Stop at Bonneville Dam and check out the giant sturgeon at the fish hatchery. Continue on I-84 West and get off on the exit that says Scenic Highway-Waterfalls. It is the old Columbia Highway and goes past several falls including Multnomah Falls. This tour ends in Troutdale. There are fantastic views along this route and it can be done in one (long) day. There are shorter variations.

Downtown: 23rd ave. Pioneer courthouse square. There is the rose garden at Washington Park. OMSI has the Star Wars exhibit until Jan. 1st. There is Cannon Beach, Multnomah Falls, Tillamook (gotta do the cheese factory tour), The air museum in Mcminville. Everything You can think of. Google Portland and most of the info will come up.

There are all kinds of tours of Portland. I wouldn't look for a bus though. Try Yahoo travel and look for the boat rides in the river right through the city center and the underground tunnel tour. I have heard those are wonderful. The museums are great and so are the gardens. Portland is the Rose City, you know. Have fun. I love to visit Portland.

Mt. Hood will be full of new snow.

Multnomah Falls will be rainy though still worth seeing; coast will be dreary, rainy and wet-cold, not sure I'd recommend the drive there.

I'd stick to the city (SE Hawthorne, SE Belmont, SE Division between 30th-50th)

If you go on a Friday night, be sure to stop by Holman's on 28 and E Burnside, there is live music, a live broadcast radio program and good food and local beer. Meet the locals, get drunk and have a blast!

Here is a crash course for Mt Hood: a must-do beginner's hike is at the end of welches road in welches (before mt hood.) The snow should be minimal on the trail (elev. ~3500 ft.) around end of October, or you may find a couple inches on the trail (wear hiking boots, you'd be fine.) Stop at the Mt Hood visitor center (erm its on Hwy 26 on the way toward the mountain, I think it's in Welches or Wemme, you'll see it) because its a great resource for visitors to the Mt Hood area. Come back off the welches trail (forget name of it) and then drive to Timberline Lodge up on the mountain. Enjoy!!!

Multnomah Falls is very pretty, but Sliver Lake falls is great you can hike for miles and they have several falls. Cannyon Beach, Seaside, Lincoln City are great to visit as well. HWY 101 is great to travel too.

I dont think I saw anyone mention The Grotto - it is a Catholic garden. I'm agnostic, but I still love to go there. This time of year it wont be as bright and lush as it could be, but it's still a nice walk if you bundle up. Other people mentioned Multnoma falls and Canon beach - EXCELLENT choices!
