I am suppose to take 2 pills every 4-6 hours. It makes me totally loopy, really sleepy, and itchy(no rash, just really itchy like I have fleas!!). I have taken it for 5 days and have hardly any relief from pain. Has anyone else had this not work for them? What about side effects?

I should have said earlier that my Dr. said it could be a ruptured disc. She did NOT do a MRI, so I think she is guessing. If I was guessing I would say a pinched nerve because it is into my right buttocks and down the outside of my right thigh. Thanks!

Tramadol is a non narcotic drug that tricks your body into thinking it is a narcotic, so it can have the same side effects- like itching.

I have used tramadol for pain and I do not find that it is effective for severe pain. It is often used as an alternative to nacotics to avoid 'addiction' at the expense of ineffective pain control.

Call your doctor back, ask for a referral to a spine specialist and see if that disk is ruptured!

Don't mess around with injured disks.

Pain going from back to leg, with feeling of ants most likely a disc. Early MRI will only show "false positive" .Even if you have a disc herniation on MRI you dont want surgery right off. Talk to your orig doctor about your response to tramadol. She may give you another medicine and adjust your tramadol. Watch how you move, get out of bed and do chores thse may make matters worse. Ask your doctor about seeing a Rehab MD or doing an EMG

It sounds like your sciatic nerve is being pinched. And that is painful in itself. If I was dealing with this I would see about getting an MRI just to find out what the heck is going on in there. Where the pain is originating from. And what your next step should be. You don't want to just medicate yourself to deal with the symptoms if you don't have to. Maybe see a different doctor.

Sorry Jo, it seems like more symptoms than 2 pills every 4-6 can handle. Get a second opinion, NOW.

Knowing what you did to cause this would be helpful, if anything. Pinched nerve somewhere comes to my mind.

I was prescribed the same thing for about the same symptoms and had some of the same symptoms (mainly at night). I'd try to lay down to sleep and it was like was going bonkers. I couldn't sleep or if I did would have these weird dreams and I would scratch like I had something all over me. I read up on this and this is a bad side effect and you need to contact your doctor.

You need something stronger than Tramadol. If it's really painful, get an MRI of your lower back.

Your body may have to adjust to the medication. However, the side effects sound very unpleasant. You should call your doctor on Monday and report your symptoms.

Here is some info on Tramadol:
