Well, if you don't believe in God, you can't hate him. If someone claims to hate God then that's between them and God.

No.
I spent years knowing God was the creator, and yet hating Him.
If you can't hate Him then you can't love Him.

Do we have free will or not?
Are my emotions mine to have, or am I merely God's puppet?
Do I have the right to examine the evidence, such as it is, and determine that by today's ideas of sane behavior the god of the old testament is deceptive, abusive, angry, wasteful, and small-minded?

Just take a part of Exodus as an example.
God goes out of his way to tell Moses that in order to 'prove His power' to the Jews he is going to force a man to choose to do evil. I had thought that the entire point of existence was so that each man, regardless of evidence, rational thought, and comfort shall of his own free will chose to do 'good', to do God's will instead of evil. But now that purpose for all of existence is less important that proving some point to the Jews, Proving God's infinite power to the Jews is more important than the idea that each human has a free will that God never violates. And so how does God prove his power? He hardens Pharaoh's heart, and thus precipitates the parting of the Red sea.
That WAS powerful, but personally I would be more impressed by being teleported out of Egypt and into the dessert, and it wouldn't require the violation of free will.

If the old testament is inspired by God and thus these are the stories He wants us to know about Him, then He is insane.

I tend to agree with djs820, As for me, It's not that I don't believe in god, I have no idea whether he exists or not, and whats more I couldn't care less. And I refuse to worship a man made higher power. As for those who hate him, more power to them, If God does in fact exist, I was taught he is a loving god, and therefore would love everyone, even those who hate him or refuse to believe in him. I was also taught that everyone is going to heaven ( that imaginary place that most christians believe actually exists)

How sure are you that the creature actually even exists outside of the mind of God.

You bring God to me, I'll show that silly bugger some real smiting, I'll turn that young pup over my knee and paddle his bottom till he is black and blue. You get a hold of God and bring him to me.

People shouldn't be God's possessions. If someone hates God they really just hate how unfair life is.
