I am currently 23 years old, 5'6" and about 30 pounds over weight which after living a highly active teenage life, has really gotten me down. Due to an accident that ruined my left knee [cartliage, muscle, tendons, everything but the actual bone itself] I can no longer do high impact activities like kick boxing. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Never been big on candy or junk food, except cokes and currently working on breaking myself of that habit. I try to stay away from breads, pastas and other high starch foods.
I am out of shape and want to start getting back in shape and toning up. I've been looking at both pilates and yoga. Is one better than the other? Could I actually rotate between the two during the week?
I'm up for any and all suggestions.

I prefer working out at home so as you suggest Yoga or Pilates could you also let me know if there is a good DVD to try?

You can definitely rotate the two. Pilates tends to focus on core body strength, but doesn't do much with respect to cardio. The flow yoga practices (ie ashtanga, hatha, jivamukti) both build strength and get the heart rate up by moving through vs. holding poses.
I think a combo would be a great treatment. I've been doing both for a while to help with some back pain I developed during pregnancy and they're very compatible - I'm stronger in my abdomen & legs due to pilates, but yoga tends to help with flexibility more and the flow practices get me sweating!
Another suggestion: if you can, try swimming. Possibly the best non-impact way of both building strength to help your knee recover and cardio to help burn fat & get back in shape. Not to mention endurance. But I know it can be tough to get access to a pool...just a thought.
But pilates/yoga together is GREAT and I heartily recommend the combo!

I find that I feel more fit when doing Pilates than Yoga. I've tried Pilates with Ellen Barrett and felt great and looked great after about 6 weeks. I have a friend who is a Pilates instructor and prefers the Windsor Method, which is closer to the original Joseph Pilates method. I've also tried Yoga and I find it good to relax to, but not to get fit. You could rotate and do Pilates in the morning and yoga at night. But to find DVDs that would work for you, www.collagevideo.com is great to get a preview of the DVD you want to buy as well as get reviews from those who bought the DVD.

Hi.
Been over 200 lbs. Now 143. Never EVER thought I could do it! Magic answer? Try it all. Don't bet on one horse. Make your health a priority in your life. It will come off gradually Pilates and/or Yoga or something else as long as you decide it's not a temporary diet but the way you want to live your life.
PS: 1 to 2 pounds a week is the only healthy weight loss rate.

Both are excellent low impact activities. Pilates focuses more on strenghtening your core, meaning your back and abs. Yoga is more about flexibility.
Both are great for building your strength up and toning your overall body. Pilates might be a little more demanding on your knees, but I wouldn't see much of a problem with doing a bit of both. As long as you feel you are getting an overall body workout, go for it!

Hello,
Yoga can be a great friend during diets. I were able to go from a size 12 to a size 8. That's what it looks like when 19 lbs vanishes.
I followed the weight loss methods described on this site http://yogafitness.toptips.org
I am sure they can help you *** well. check it out
Cheers.
