As humanity moves forward, we increasingly communicate, travel, and influence the environment around us globally. Engineers have designed and developed the communications satellites, the cell phones, and the televisions which we communicate with each other on a global scale. Engineers have designed and developed the commercial airliners, the cars, the railway systems, and the ships we use when we travel globally. Engineers have designed and developed the water treatment plants, the nuclear power plants, the coal, gas, and oil burning plants which affect our environment.
The technological output of engineers worldwide has made the world a smaller place. The future devices that engineers will make will certainly also affect society and the environment globally. I suspect that as time moves forward, this will continue to make the world a better place with reduced emission cars, alternative forms of energy, rapid transportation that has increased reliability and safety, and faster and more lifelike communications systems.

Engineers understand the ideosyncracies of the logistical make-up of the finished product. What this means is each part has been scrutinised independantly of the assembly to assure that the integrity of the assembly is not comprimised by it's own weekness.
This analogy is true to nearly every circumstance or project.

Because nothing gets done without engineers. Other people just look at a problem and scratch their heads and go "gee, I don't know what to do."
