basically, the wife lights 2 canldes which will last at least 3 hours each, then waves her hands over the candles 3 times and covers her eyes and then says the blessing.

from a practical point of view . it was to provide illumination for the night time rituals.
It is also similar to the candle lighting ceremonies of the Christian Church which it took from the Jewish tradition.
on the spiritual side it represents the light of their idea of God . same for the Christian side.
The two or more candles are lit by the woman of the house.

Yes, Jewish people do light a candle for the beginning of Sabbath. They flick their bic, or strick a match, and light them. During the ceremony they may quote an old testament blessing to welcome the sabbath. They may also drink a small glass of Jewish wine... It is tradiditon. I lived with a Jewish family for a while as a nanny.

for starters get a lighter, then light the candle, the put it in a candle holder, then watch the candle melt away!! thats the steps, thats the art of it!! anymore questions let me know.
