Scientifically?? All I know is that when you are on the back of a Harley for six hours you will get wind burn.

yes. surfers , boaters ,water sports.motorcycle riders bikers, hikers etc just being out in a very windy day you can get wind burn. you can even get it in a winter snow storm. Keep you exposed skin protected.
It hurts like #%$&
