Cats do this sometimes for several reasons. Some reasons are:

the litter box is dirty

she might want a new litter box

she might notice a change in the litter ( if there is any)

she might not like the location of the litter box

fear

maybe she senses another cat has used the litter box (if you have more than one cat)

Your kitty may not like your litter... my older cat would drop me a surprise outside the litter box when I would change to a litter he didn't like... try that first. If that doesn't work (since your kitty is in the box it is trying to go there) I would try putting a smaller litter box inside a larger one (you sometimes have to be sneakier than the kitten! Good luck with your kitty.

Maybe the litter box isn't clean enough for her. My cat would do that so we started immediately removing the feces and got a bigger litter box now he is fine.

Get one with a "lid" type thing on it, it looks like a little house. You can get them at walmart. We had to do this for my cat, he has some mental issues and would fall out of the box, so this has really helped!

well maybe you need a litter box Gard. the box Gard is a type of litter box caver that raises the sides of the box higher so she can't go poop on the outside of the box.

take a broomstick and when she starts to hike her butt out push her little tush back in. But use a broomstick cause she might get angry.
