Because religion is NO GOOD. It starts wars, kills millions, causes more suffering than happiness. Religion separates people into groups believing that their deity and beliefs are better than another's. This may sound crude, but religion is the root of all evil.

The true religion did not start any wars. Not only do followers of that religion, but as Isaiah 2:4 says that would not even LEARN war anymore. Jesus said we should love our enemies, not kill them. Does your religion practice that?

Because religion is good does not mean religious people are good all of the time.
Because religion is good means religious people are good some of the time and try to stop genocides and so forth.
People start wars - not religions.

It's not religion doing that - it's mankind doing that. Religion just offers up a convenient excuse.

Although, do you honestly think we'd have less war in a world of atheists? Nope. They'd just have to search for other excuses to kick the snot out of each other.

Religion doesn't start wars. People do.

Yes, they use religion, but they also use politics, race, ethnicity, territory, nationalism, imperialism, and a host of other things.

Blaming religion is rather selective, and usually indicates an agenda that is anti-religion, not anti-war.

Because the faithful are told "if you question what you are told you are showing a lack of faith" therefore, people don't question. This makes it easy for the power mad or just plain evil people to rule over the faithful by telling them what to do, think and say. It's very sad that they fulfill what Solomon wrote at Ecclesiastes 8:9 "All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt." Sad isn't it?

Despite being atheist, I'm going to have to go with mrdav on this one.

There are lots of "reasons" (almost all bad ones) to start wars. Even if we never invented god, we'd certainly still war over many other things.

Religion didn't start wars...people's misinterpretation of religion did. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Most folks THINK theirs is the one & only religion. If folks had open minds regarding what others practised we wouldn't have to argue. No harm...no foul. ;)
