Some won't agree with me, but I don't think it matters, as long as the owner knows it died. If I let my dogs out into the street, I don't deserve to have them around.

Why didn't you stop to get him help? You could have saved the dog! At this point, I would just put a few hundred dollars into an envelope and leave it anonymously with a note that you are so sorry and that you hope that this can at least compensate for any expenses incurred with the dog's remains. Telling the owner it was you, will probably cause the worst of feelings because they would not possibly understand why you did not get their dog help. Had you gotten the dog to a vet, and paid the expenses, and it lived, you would have been a hero.

Even if you were late for work you should always check the road in front of you, it's the owner's fault for not keeping an eye on his dog though. You should go apologize and hope he/she will forgive you

I don't know what state you are in - but some states - a dog is a piece of property - and you are at fault for running him/her over. Yep, just like running over a cow (but not a cat). And in this case - a "hit-and-run."
Before consulting with the grieving owner, check this out with a lawyer. You may not be in any trouble at all - since the dog was allowed to roam the streets without a leash and master!
Then you may want to offer to pay for the funeral.
No matter your legal responsibility it would be a good thing to offer your sympathy. Don't think about yourself -- please think of their loss.

Sorry but yes it was your fault. Yes you should tell the owner of the dog. How would you feel if someone hit you dog and killed it. Unless your just truely heartless. It's still apart of someone family. What if it was someone child would you tell them?

Yes, I think the owner has a right to know it wasn't your falt so just tell them you will feel much better. If you still feel bad offer to give them a new dog if they refuse you tried that is all that matters.

Yes you should because being open to the owner of the dog might make it more easy for you and then if they knew and that you are sorry.

i think you commited a crime. u left the scene of an accident. even though "people" weren't involved u still needed to tell someone right after it happened. as far as fault, no the dog shouldn't have been loose. that part wasn't your fault.

if you dont want an embarrasing talk with the owner then you could just post a card through their door saying how sorry you are with a bit of cash in it.
