Karate is worth it, but as far as how much it costs vary by school so there isn't an "average" cost per month. and because there is NO Martial Art that is better than another, so you'll have to see what schools are available to you in your area, and attend some of the classes to see which one interests you the most, and then find out if they have a trial period of classes to go to and decide if you like it.

It is difficult to discern which types of schools are "belt factories" but you have to see whether or not they put emphasis on quality of what you learn and not how many belts they can sell you, or how many tournaments their members have won or how many accolades they've garnered, and how committed they are to teach you properly in the discipline.

As far as Chun Kuk Do, I only know that it is a "hybrid Martial Art" that it has several backgrounds in other disciplines to form it's basis such combinations of Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwan Do, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Professional Wrestling, Muay Thai, Shodokan and many more.

and that every year in Las Vegas they hold an annual tournament and convention during the summer by the UFAF (united fighting arts federation) organization, this discipline is said to be founded by Chuck Norris. the official website is www.chunkukdo.com

Patriot Self Defense system succeeds for 2 main reasons. The initial is that it use basic actions combined from all the most effective combating designs available. The 2nd is that the makers of this program really did not stop there, they took these steps into the research laboratory and ran all kind of scientific examinations to amass as much information as possible before setting to function to examine this data and created a clinical established self-defense system that fairly frankly reinvents the market.

Unfortunately, kiddy oriented McSportsKarate is what is marketable nowadays. Most adults are either uninterested or do not have the time to study a martial arts, especially at a school/club that does not guarantee a black belt in two years or less. I have usually not had to pay for karate instruction, having studied mostly with traditional instructors, either a friend or a traditional instructor whose "club" had dues that went to pay for the club's costs and not to pay the instructor.

I would go with a type of Jiu Jitsu. Jiu jitsu is not like karate where you learn repitition of moves. Jiu Jitsu emphasizes on free sparring where you fight an actual opponent. This is better I think because you are actually fighting and applying your skill rather than just practicing it over and over again and when the time comes to use it you're not ready.

If you just wanna punch around for an aerobic type of activity just stick to tae bo. But if you wanna fight and apply Jiu Jitsu is where its at.

Please do not mix up Karate with any ordinary Aerobic. Karate or any other Martial Art is not for fighting but to learn patience and discipline.

I think it is not good idea to ask what to do or learn with others because they do not know about your body what can it absorb. You know yourself better than anyone else. Therefore do that what is interesting and good for you. If you do anything which is not interesting you will leave half done.

I am sorry if my answer is not what you expected for.

Karate is worth doing if you are looking to keep fit and learn self discipline, however it is not very good as a method of self defence. If you are loking for an art that will help you accomlish both try Thai boxing or Brazillian jiu jitsu.

good luck

Things that tip you off to the Art my Teacher calls Take Your Do:

Is there a contract? (not necessarily a bad sign)
Look at the contract. Are there Fees, fees, fees, for every thing? Testing, graduating, tournaments, moving from beginner to intermediate class, etc, etc...
Do six year olds have adult black belts? Not one exceptional kid, but LOTS of them?
Look at the black belts. Are they out of shape? (not necessarily a bit overweight, but are they tired and unable to continue after half the class?)

Good luck!
