I would look into a rescue, there are millons of wonderful pets who are looking and desever a good home! Petfinder has a wonderful site! Call your local shelter to see what they have in, most get small animals as well as cats and dogs.

First research on the internet what type of pet you are considering.
Do you have adequate time to meet the pets needs?
Are you willing to do all that is necessary to take care of the animal?
Are you financially prepared to support a pet (food, bedding, toys, vet bills, etc.)?
Do you have room for the pet (such as a yard for an active dog to play)?
After answering yes to all of the above questions, go to your local Humane Society. They will have lots of pets to choose from. Usually cats and dogs, but sometimes rabbits, rats, hamsters, ferrets, etc. The come already altered and vaccinated so for a reasonable adoption fee your good to go.

Why are you confused?

You said you don't care what the pet is.....that statement bothers me. You should ALWAYS read up on any animal you're looking into before bringing into your home. Even something as seemingly easy as a guinea pig requires much more care than most people realize.

As far as where....pet stores are OK for rodents, birds, lizards, and fish, but DON'T buy puppies or kittens from them. They usually come from horribly inadequate puppy and kitten mills.

For cats and dogs, look in the paper or at your local shelter.

If you don't care what the pet is, I can't see how you'd care about the pet itself. These are living beings with feelings, and I think perhaps you should wait & mature a few years before getting any pets.
