I'm not a Muslim, I just want to understand this beleif better. I know the things that I have seen committed in the name of Islam, and read about, and watched, and experienced...but, just to be fair, will listening and following along help me to understand this beleif better? Or, a waste of $20? Any other suggestions? I'm honestly trying to see the peace they speak so feverently of and keep an open mind.

I think that's a great way to learn more about Islam.

You might also try reading the Hadiths, and looking up history of the different Muslim sects (Shiite, Sunni, etc.) - also, it would be good to pick up a biography of Mohammed.

I have personally enjoyed "A Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam" which I saw at borders, and I also like the website:

Good on you for wanting to understand Islam :) I hope you find the recitation of the Qur'an beautiful. I don't understand the Arabic language that well but just listening to it makes me feel at peace. I hope the audiotape you bought has English translations as that will be better for your learning experience.

If you'd like to learn more about Islam, in my opinion, interacting with a knowledgable, practicing Muslim is one of the best ways. Try to find out where the local mosque in your area is and I can assure you they will be happy to answer any of your enquiries. If you're not quite ready for that yet, approach a Muslim here on Yahoo Answers who would like to share his/her knowledge of Islam with you.

Read the English translation of the Qur'an but pick one that has a simplified translation (there many versions of translations out there, some can be quite complex). One of my favourite Surahs is Surah Luqmaan :)

If you would like to see a Ramadhan teraweh prayer session in Mecca visit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knB_5UCbkZ0. An Imam is reading a Surah from the Qur'an and you can read the English translation in this video.

Here is a website containing Muhammad's (pbuh) hadiths (sayings) organized into different categories. http://www.twf.org/Sayings/Sayings.html

Good luck.

Peace be unto you!

I believe you should request some help with the translation of words from the Arabic of the Quran. A Roman transliteration or an Arabic/English dictionary can be of some help, or approach someone for honest help with the translation.

First of all, there isn't one honest translation of the Quran around and in your tape you will most likely hear Jesus and Jews and Christians mentioned, and this is false and misleading, so you wont be listening to the Quran but to what someone thinks you should hear about his/her opinion of the Quran.

I was introduced to the Quran with a gift of a Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall translation of the Quran in which Allah is not falsely translated to God but which maintains Allah throughout, but he used the same mistaken identities of Jesus and Jews and Christians, which makes it very difficult to understand the truth.

I followed my friend's instructions to read Quran only after a bath or when you are clean. He explained that the Quran does not open to the unclean. I added to this by approaching it with an open mind, that was, as if it was a cowboy novel, which was my favourite novel.

LIke you, I wanted to be fair to my friend and to myself.

I had, two years before, searched the Quran for what it said about "Jesus" as I told my friend that he was conned by Arabs into believing there was Jesus in their book and that I would find their errors. I found nothing to criticise and threw the book aside until I could re-examine the book as a whole.

You may be better off with a soft cover translation that you can read.

Try to bear in mind that the Jesus is actually Isa and do not follow the Jesus fallacy. You can replace the Jesus and the Jews and the Christians with Isa and Yahuudi and Nazaaraa.

Reading Jesus in the Quran is allowing the translator to deceive you and this denies you a clearer undertsanding.

Upon my first clean reading of the Quran, I accepted ALLAH as my Lord and the One to Whom I prayed in my conversion of the prayer that Christ prayed to the Only True God in John 17:3.

It took me two years of reading the Quran before I would even look at Muhammad as a prophet. Who needs Muhammad when Jesus was there? But I had not yet understood that Isa was not Jesus.

I read Quran for another two years before I went among the Muslims and testified publicly that I accepted ALLAH as the Only True God and Muhammad as His messenger.

ALLAH is your Lord and only ALLAH can guide you, if He Wills.

ALLAH may have already inspired you to this stage and this is something that you should be helped along with by all Muslims around you. You are already on the path to being a brother and you will never have regrets if you keep on the Path you have taken.

Please feel free to contact me whenever you so wish, insha Allah (if Allah so wills).

May ALLAH guide you in your quest.

Well for learning it is better for you to buy the text. Audio is more for those who already have an idea and are a little advanced. Qur'an is Qur'an, however in the text, you will find footnotes that go into detail about certain topics that you might never have learned about before. For example the story of the cave. Audio is more for reflecting than for learning, however it is better than nothing!

I applaud you for your fairness and your desire to seek the truth about Islam. May your efforts be rewarded.
