It wasn't because she wanted to be there when He died, since he died unusually quickly, it would normally have taken much longer, especially since Jesus was still speaking in His final moments and Crucifixion ends by death from suffocation.

She was most likely visiting Him as anyone would if you knew your child, parent, or relative was being tormented to see them and comfort them, also she probably asked him to end this charade thinking he could easily save himself since she had already asked him to use his divine authority at the wedding of Canaan. She was also there probably to hear from Him, and as it's written He did tell her His goodbye.

Also, she wasn't there when He died, John specifically wrote that after Jesus commanded him to watch over Mary he took her home, and then Jesus death took place.

As a point of knowledge and interest, Mary was about 48 when Jesus died.

In regards to Mary Magdalene, of which I am sure you are not referring, she was never at the cross. The bible only mentions that she was standing afar when Christ died with the other women who helped Him and some other acquaintances of His.

Probably for the same reason a person sentenced to death can have their family present if they wish. For the family members it's a way of showing love for their condemned family member, and for the condemned it could be a source of comfort at the end of their lives.
