No doubt you've seen plenty of programs all over the net that claim to be able to speed up your computer, double your download speeds, free up resources, etc. 90% of the time, its a load of rubbish. Even the ones that do have some kind of effect generally perform actions you could have done yourself, without the aid of the program. Try a tweaking guide instead, if you want to increase the general performance of your computer.
http://www.tweaktown.com/ for example.
Just dont expect your rig to go from slow to super-fast. It doesn't work that way.

Most of these programs are scams or just plain ineffective. What makes your comptuer faster is faster hardware. There's very little software can do to "actually" speed anything up.
There are applications that clean away junkware like Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Windows Defender. These don't "speed up" your computer, but they will clean out junk software that can slow it down.

Norton SystemWorks or McAfee Utilities package. I prefer SystemWork for get rid of internet cache, Window program problems, and keeping the hard drive straight. I loved it so much, I bought the stock.

First, defragment, then run "disk check", then click start, all programs, (Win XP), accessories, system tools, then click on disk clean up.
