I had no problems at all with mine. I felt much better afterwards with no digestive issues.

I had mine removed in 1991. Also had a mother, sister, daughter, and niece that had theirs removed. All at a young age. So I think it might be a genetic thing. All (except my mother) had it done through the belly button. I had pains about once every month or 2 for 2 years before and then the big one hit. None of us had problems after.. If he has to get it out then he must be in pain and it is a real relief to get rid of that. You are a little sore afterwards but the sooner he gets up and walks around and is active the quicker that will go away. Also (and I know this because I've had 4 c-sections also) when he gets up or down or in and out of bed or even coughs tell him to hold a bed pillow really tight against his stomach. That makes a huge difference. And if he has to turn over in bed do this also. The only time food bothers me now is if I eat A LOT of Mayo or creamy things and then it is just a little nausea. I would have it done again in a second. He'll feel so much better when it is over.

If he's having it removed, he's already negatively affected. He should get some relief from his current symptoms after the surgery. He may have to stay away from spicy or greasy foods for a while, but pain in the right shoulder and upper abdominal pain should go away. I had a laproscopic cholecystectomy done (gallbladder removal) last April. I eat Mexican foods, pizza, and other foods with little problem. I was just a little tender for a few days, but bounced back right away. Try to relax.
I'm an RN so have been on both sides of this issue...as a patient and as a nurse.

I had my gallbladder removed 4 months ago. They make 4 small slits,1 in your lower part ofyour belly button,1 about 3-4 inches above it and 2 on on the right side. They insert a small camera in one tools to cut in 2 of them and then 1 to remove it from. It is a in and out surgery. For the first week or two they will have you on a special dietThey want you to walk as much as you can comfortably can.It helped me holding a pillow against my stomach. As far as the digestion I can't tell any differenceGood luck and speedy recovery to your friend!!.

I had conventional gall bladder surgery at the age of 27. They made a long incision on my right side of the abdomen to remove it. I never heard of anyone having digestive problems after surgery. As for the belly button therory, I think someone's been pushing your buttons the wrong way! I know it's much less invasive to what I under went, but I would assume its still done on the right side of the abdomen where it's located!

I had my gallbladder removed about 2 years ago,I could'nt eat anything for about 2 days without getting sick but after that i was fine, as long as he takes it easy i tried to do laundry a few days after my surgery & i had alot of pain from carrying the basket ,so as long as he stays off his feet for at least a week or so & doesn't eat anything greasey he should be fine

i have not had my GB taken out but know many people who did. it technically should not cause problems with digestion. and he should be happy that its a laparoscopic procedure, not a big slash on the right side of his belly. they poke 2-3 holes in the belly, one to operate and one for the camera and take it out through the hole they will poke above his belly button. he'll have some post-op pain but i'm sure they will take care of that with meds.

He shouldn't have too many problems. The only thing that I would foresee considering all of his bile produced by his liver will go straight to his stomach is that he may have indigestion or heart burn. Tums or prilocec OTC should take care of that though.
