I have several dogs and they are treated like family. If you can't afford to take your child to the doctor then why did you have it in the first place? Same thing with pets. They need and deserve good medical care.

I know what you mean - there's so many instances where I think that the person must be mentally deficient to not be taking their animal to the vet when they ask things like "my 8 week old kitten is vomiting blood - what can I do?". It astounds me - I will have the cats up to the vet pronto whenever I see something isn't right with them. Funny thing is I ask about my health on websites and whatnot all the time & avoid the doctor! But that's my call. I'm responsible for the welfare of these cats that I have so if it's beyond me as to what's going on then it's off to the vet. Sadly circumstances change & it makes it harder to afford vet bills but gee - I had just spent $500 on my car to keep it going to get to the job I was later that week made redundant from & had a ton of outstanding bills right before my birthday when my cat got blocked with crystals. I had him taken in for surgery without even thinking twice as we had tried everything to avoid it but it didn't work so there was no choice - I wasn't going to sit there & watch my cat die slowly & painfully! I ate noodles & bread for 4 months while I paid the bill off but I don't regret it for a minute & will do it again in a heartbeat if needs be. Yes, I asked online about stories people had with similar circumstances so I could learn about the condition more & be prepared for a lifestyle change & all but still - "my cat is having trouble peeing & is yowling when he goes, is this ok?" never came into my head.

I agree, alot of times it is common sense that you would take a dog or cat or any animal to the vet if it is seriously ill, etc, etc, or even to just check it out to make sure even if it is a smaller issue, some people don't think..I am a freak about the vet and take my cat in if I find it is serious otherwise I contact a technician or someone for help, I surround myself with people in the field though so I can ask those questions and get information when I need it, it is always good to know people..

TOTALLY!!!!! There are SO many people that can't or WON'T take the animals to the vet!! OR they want free programs to pay for it!!!!! Pets are a luxury!! If you have 4 kids and a crappy income....DO NOT GET A PET!!!!!!!! You must know that if a suprise vet bill were to occur, you would be screwed!!! BUT< they go and get a pet anyway!!! Many of them even PAY for a purebred dog and then claim that they can't afford the vet!!! It is so sad. I am sure a lot of them wouldn't take the kids to the doctor either if WE all weren't paying for it with our taxes!!!!!
There is just no personal responsibility anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL!
My dog was hit by a car, will she be ok???
My dog has been vomiting for a couple of weeks, what could be wrong?
My dog is bleeding, what to do?
There are times when people can't afford treatment, like in a long term illness. That I understand, most of us don't have several thousand sitting around earmarked for emergency Vet care. But for crying out loud, if your dog is spurting blood, take it to the Vet!

I agree with you!.WAY too many people get animals and never give a second thought to having their pets vet checked! It's a crying shame that animals have to suffer because of their owners stupidity.

In my opinion, due to the rising cost of an exam visit, medications, imaging, etc. in the Veterinary field, it's not uncommon.
I take many calls each day where people want OTC treatment suggestions due to their lack of funds, and most of the times, I don't have any suggestions other than "seek medical help".
And Pet Insurance doesn't work like our insurance, so that another hurdle for pet owners to over come. It all comes down to money!
