The dog is just turned a year old, this morning we find that she has all these little bumps on her - they seemed to spread as the morning progressed but are not causing any discomfort as she isn't fussing at them and has normal energy levels.

A woman at a shop suggested she had hives and added that giving her an antihistamine like Benadryl would ease it. We did give her one tablet and for about an hour and half most of them went away. They are now coming back. Still, there is no scratching and biting.

There's been no change in diet, no change in detergents that we wash her linens in. No new products have been introduced to her environment. We are doing work around the house and as it involves drywall there is a lot of dust. But we've doing this work for a week and there were no earlier symptoms of this.

Aside from the vet (emergency ones are really busy right now) are there any home remedies? How much more Benadryl can I give her in a day?

You can safely (in healthy dogs) give 1 milligram per pound of body weight of Benadryl to a dog every 8-12 hours. You need to make sure it is JUST PLAIN BENADRYL and nothing with pseudoephedrine in it (Like Sudafed or Benadryl Sinus, etc). The only ingredient should be diphenhydramine HCl. Watch your dog for continued and/or progressive signs of an allergic reaction, like facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or hives that won't go away. Difficult breathing/swallowing should be considered an emergency and you would need to go to an animal ER ASAP. Your vet can give a steroid injection to help reverse the allergic reaction if the Benadryl isn't working.

If the hives are because of an allergy, it may help her be more comfortable until she gets to the vet, but I don't think it would get rid of the hives. One of my beagles has allergy problems and needs a benadryl pill every now and then. She only got the liquid when she was a puppy. And it's vet recommended (at least by mine, it is and I think he's a wonderful vet). She's about 40 lbs and she only gets one tablet per 12 hours. It all depends on their weight. When she was a puppy, she got only a teaspoon full of children's benadryl. Hope she feels better!

I had a dog that got hives. You need to contact your vet about the Benadryl. There is a certain amount per weight of the dog. You need to be careful.

Benadryl Dose -
1mg per pound of body weight

Pills are 25mg, liquid is 12.5mg, and infants is about 7 mg

You can give 2 doses a day, but if the hives come back, I suggest seeing your DVM because it could be something else. And any vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation or seizures, see a DVM ASAP, it could be an anaphylactic reaction.
