the crescent and star are not religious symbols for Islam..No one really recognize how or when were they used but the crescent signifies the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan..
In the Qur'an:
They ask thee, (O Muhammad), of new moons, say: They are fixed seasons for mankind and for the pilgrimage."2, 189"
And of His portents are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon; but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if it is in truth Him Whom ye worship. "41, 37"
So the crescent is not a symbol for Islam but for the Islamic calendar..
just to correct you and letting Chrisian fundies tell you that we worship a moon God.

haven't heard of one. suggest this might be a good project for the atheists and agnostics to come up with their own symbol. might be interesting to see what they each come up with.

There is none. They are not a religion. They don't believe in a diety.

Atheism, seems to me, to be a faith based religion. I mean they do hang out in the religion section. Kinda obvious to me.
